New U of Toronto Certificate in Digital Strategy and Communications Management launches winter 2013

And speaking of education…

Well, it’s official and I’m excited to announce a new digital and social media program created by the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies.

We’re launching a three-course Certificate in Digital Strategy and Communications Management in January 2013.

The classes are geared to communications and marketing professionals who want to fine tune their skills and learn how to adopt a strategic approach to digital and social networks. And we combine the why and how with hands-on instruction in the tools and the way they work.

I’m pleased to be the lead instructor and program developer (the non-coding kind of developer, that is) and we’ve assembled a talented team who will be creating course modules and teaching including: Eden Spodek, Marcus Daniels, Diane Begin and Cyrus Mavalwala.

The courses are:

Foundations of Digital Strategy and Social Media – the first course provides a framework for integrating digital, social and mobile platforms and multimedia storytelling into a strategic communications and marketing program. Classes begin January 2013 – enrollment is limited.

Social On the Inside: Internal Communications On and Offline - examines social and digital communications from within an organization, as a strategic relationship builder and community management tool.  We’re offering this class Spring 2013.

Advanced Practices in Digital Reputation Management - builds on the knowledge and practical experience professionals gained in the first two courses in an advanced setting that enables participants to take their strategic digital skills to the next level. Begins Fall 2013.

Our plan is to start with the Foundation and add a new course each term so that by the end of 2013, all three courses will be running concurrently. Classes will be held at the St. George campus and we have plans to grow it to other U of T locations.

Up till now, learning about digital and social media has been largely DIY. Sure, you can go to conferences and meetups, take webinars and even enroll in the occasional course or two, but for the most part, it was incumbent on the user to spend the time testing, learning and sharing.

That created an entrepreneurial spirit and spawned a lot of  innovation.

We want to take that energy and put it into an interactive classroom setting where the emphasis will be on real-time digital and social learning and practice.

Interested to hear what you think. We’re happy to answer any questions about the program. Hope to see you in class!

Note: Contrary to the photo, classes will not be held outside :) .

@mjkushin Thanks! At some point we're hoping to add an online component too. But that's down the road. Stay tuned.
