Every fall I get the urge to return to school (lots of people do). And for the past two years I’ve been able to satisfy that need thanks to the social media course I’m teaching at McMaster University.

It’s starts again September 10 and offers PR and marketing students an opportunity to learn about, understand and try social media tools in an informative and (hopefully) fun environment.

Here are some of the things we cover in the 14-week class:

  • Communications and network theory and models – it’s important to have a foundation in the basics
  • Developing strategies and goals
  • Blogging – every student sets up and their own blog, posts at least twice a week and tries to build a community
  • The latest and not so latest platforms and tools including Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, wikis, blogs and now Google+
  • Case studies, issues and trends

We also have special guest lecturers.

This is a hands-on class where you participate both online and IRL.  I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to lead it and have met many smart and talented students who I’m sure I’ll see again in the industry.

If you’re interested, there are still some spaces open. I think it’s worth the drive to Hamilton.
